The Waiakea Warriors hosted the Pahoa Daggers on Senior night Thursday (Feb 11). Both teams played hard, with strong defense and well-run offenses on both ends of the court. Pahoa’s high scorers were Isaiah Ekau with 16 points, John Byrd Jr with 10 and Nick Fisher with 7. For Waiakea the high scorers were Isaak Janado with 23 points, Joey Pacheco with 9, and Matt Libao and Chris Mattos with 6 points each.
Waiakea defeated St. Joseph 62-59 Tuesday (Feb 9). High scorers for St. Joseph were Jacob Andrade with 18 points, Sebastian Ohara-Saft with 17, and Thomas Fairman with 16. Waiakea’s high scorers were Matt Libao with 18 points, Chris Mattos with 11 and Clayton Morante with 9.
The Keaau Cougars and the Waiakea Warriors met in a battle for first place Saturday (Jan 30). It was an intense fight, and while Keaau had a slow start in the first quarter, they picked up steam in the second, tying the game at the half. They did not look back after taking the lead in the third, and defeated Waiakea 66-52.
Waiakea’s high scorers were Matt Libao with 18 points, Isaak Janado with 13, and Clayton Morante with 10. Keaau’s high scorers were Richie Handy with 23 points, Makana Cazimero with 15, and Haku Ishibashi with 10.
Thursday’s (Jan 28) game between the Hilo Vikings and the visiting Waiakea Warriors was everything a battle for first place should be.
From the first whistle to the final buzzer, the game was fast paced, intense, and full of action. While Waiakea led for most of the game, Hilo fought hard and tied it up in the fourth quarter. The lead was traded back and forth with neither team succeeding in building a lead.
The lead changed three times in the final minute of the game, and the Civic Auditorium shook with the sounds of the fans cheering on their teams. In the end, Waiakea held onto their lead and took the game, 51-48.
Hilo’s high scorers were Scotty Wong with 13 points, Dustin Leong with 12 and Dakota Allen with 9. Waiakea’s high scorers were Joey Pacheco with 11 points, Clayton Morante with 10, and Matt Libao and Isaak Janado with 9 each.
The Waiakea Warriors defeated the Ka‘u Trojans tonight (Jan 14) 67-23.

The Waiakea Warriors came out strong in the first quarter of tonight’s game against the Keaau Cougars, and took an early lead. They were not able to maintain their lead as Keaau came back in the second quarter to tie the game up at halftime. The third quarter belonged to the Cougars as they held onto a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter. Waiakea pushed hard in the fourth quarter, but were not able to gain any momentum. Keaau pulled out the home floor victory, 54-42.
Waiakea’s three high scorers were Matt Libao with 12 points, Chris Mattos with 11, and Isaak Janado with 8. Keaau’s high scorers were Richard Handy with 19 points, Haku Ishibashi with 14, and Makana Cazimero with 8.
The Hilo Vikings and the Waiakea Warriors met Friday (Jan 8) in front of a packed gymnasium for their first match-up of the 2010 season. Both teams played hard, countering strong offense with good defense. The crowd was really into the game as well as they cheered on their team.
Hilo’s high scorers were Scotty Wong with 18 points and Dakota Allen with 12. Chan Spikes and Dylan Guthier each had 10 points. Waiakea’s high scorers were Matt Libao with 16 points, Cameron Ita with 12, and Chris Mattos with 10.
Public Works personnel will be replacing a section of the overhead traffic signal at the intersection of Kamehameha, Manono and Lihiwai in Hilo, Saturday, January 9. Only one lane will be open for motorists bound for Hilo or, turning left on to Manono street this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please plan for delays.
Monday-Tuesday (Jan 11-12)
Manono Street will be resurfaced on Monday and Tuesday, January 11 and 12. Roadwork begins at the Lihiwai intersection, and ends at Pi‘ilani Street. The Department of Public Works has scheduled roadwork from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days, weather permitting. Call 334-9559 for updates.
