Pahala Public and School Library to re-open Monday (Jan 25)


Pahala Public and School Library (Big Island) is scheduled to reopen on Monday, January 25 at 11 a.m. The Library has been closed for major renovations including health, safety, and accessibility improvements, and the installation of a new roof.

When the Library reopens, there will be a change in public service hours:

  • Monday, Thursday, and Friday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday: Closed

In addition, the Library will no longer provide Passport Application Acceptance Service so that staff can focus on providing core library services to patrons during these difficult economic times.

The Library staff would like to thank the public for their generous support of this service, and for their understanding. Interested Big Island library patrons who need passport application acceptance service may contact Keaau Public and School Library at (808) 982-4281 to schedule an appointment.

Naalehu Public Library, which provided temporary extended public service hours while Pahala Public and School Library was closed, will continue to offer the following public service hours:

  • Monday, Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Thursday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Friday, noon – 5 p.m.

The Library, located behind the Civic Center in Naalehu, is closed on Saturday and Sunday. For more information about Naalehu Public Library’s programs and services, please call (808) 939-2442.

Kealakekua Public Library to close July 27-31


MEDIA RELEASE

Kealakekua Public Library is scheduled to close temporarily from Monday, July 27 to Friday, July 31 to complete earthquake repairs caused by the October 2006 temblor.

While the library is closed, the book drops will be also closed from July 27-30. The bookdrops will be re-opened on Friday, July 31. Pick up dates for holds will be extended and due dates for returned items will also be adjusted.

Customers are encouraged to log-on to the HSPLS website, www.librarieshawaii.org remotely, to browse the HSPLS Catalog for book titles, eBooks, digital audio books, EBSCOhost (features a wide a variety of online databases), which provides full-text materials from magazines, newspapers, journals, and other publications.

Teen Slack Key guitar virtuoso featured at public libraries

danny-carvalho-croppedDanny Carvalho, a 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee, will be the featured artist for this year’s HSPLS Teen Summer Reading Program at 16 selected public libraries statewide from June 20 – July 14.  Admission is free.    

Carvalho, an 18-year-old slack key guitar virtuoso, was nominated for his CD “Somewhere” in the “Slack Key Album of the Year” category.  Carvalho, who began playing guitar at the age of nine, is a student of Ozzie Kotani, slack key master and teacher.

He will perform and discuss the music of the following artists who have influenced his journey in Kiho`alu (slack key): Raymond Kane, Ledward Ka`apana, Sonny Chillingworth, “Atta” Isaacs, Gabby Pahinui, and Kotani. This 45-minute program is recommended for ages 11 and older.

This special library performance tour by Carvalho is sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, National Football League Charities, Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Hawaiian Telcom, Junior League of Honolulu, UH-Manoa Outreach College, and is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Contact the hosting library prior to the performance date if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed: on Oahu, two weeks in advance; on Neighbor Islands, three weeks in advance.

“Reading Rocks @ your library” is the theme of the 2009 HSPLS Teen Summer Reading Program.  The program will feature books about rock and roll music, rock bands, geology and gemology, rock climbing, and even “rocking the boat” for environmental protection and by taking a stand to make your voice heard.

Students entering grade 7 this fall through 2009 high school graduates who register for the program, visit their local library weekly, and read at least one book per week, will receive complimentary reading incentives from sponsors Hawaii Pizza Hut and Frito-Lay of Hawaii, while supplies last. Teens will also be invited to enter in-branch drawings for a chance to win Apple iPod Shuffles, courtesy of the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, and regional electronic prizes and personal pan pizza certificates, provided by Hawaii Pizza Hut.  For more information and to register, please contact your local library.

Public libraries closed for Memorial Day weekend


MEDIA RELEASE

In observance of the Memorial Day Holiday, all public libraries will be closed from Saturday through Monday, May 23 – 25. Holualoa Public Library, will be closed from May 22-26, and reopen on May 27.

The hours of some libraries will be adjusted for this holiday.  Visit www.librarieshawaii.org or call your local library for public service hours.
