The University of Hawaii at Hilo beat the Academy of Art University 84-59 in a Pacific West Conference game in the UHH gymnasium.

The Vulcans improved to 11-7 overall and 5- 3 in the PacWest while the Urban Knights are 0-17 overall and 0-7 in the PacWest.

“We pretty much had control of the game but we weren’t pretty with it,” UHH head coach Jeff Law said. “There was a lot of comfort, non-comfort factors that played out in the first half.

“Second half, we got out to run. We got some boards and hit some shots. It was a totally different half.”

Hitting 31 of 53 shots from the field (58.5 percent) didn’t make much room for rebounds yet the Vulcans pulled in 31 defensive rebounds and eight offense rebounds. On the other side, the Urban Knights’ tallied 18 offensive and defensive rebounds.

The Vulcans also tallied 15 assists with 22 turnovers.

Andrew Gipson led the Vulcans with 18 points and seven rebounds. Lavell Shipman added 14 points while Bryan Ngo added 12 points. Justin Smith and Kevin Bruce added 11 points each.

UH-Hilo beats Gustavus Adolphus College 69-50

Photography by Rick Ogata | Special to Hawaii 24/7

MEDIA RELEASE

The University of Hawaii at Hilo beat Gustavus Adolphus College 69-50 to end their pre-conference season with a 4-game winning streak.

Both the Vulcans and Golden Gusties are 6-4.

Justin Smith led the Vulcans with a 15-point, 10-rebound performance. Bryan Ngo added 14 points and Andrew Gipson had 10.

“I was very scared coming into this game as they are a very good team,” UHH head coach Jeff Law said. “They out-rebounded us but we had only seven turnovers and shot pretty well.

“As a group we played very good defense in the first half and carried it over into the second half. I just thought we played a good team game and we played physical.”

The Vulcans dished out 12 assists and recorded nine steals.

Pacific West Conference play opens on the road for the Vulcans as head to the Bay Area to face Academy of Art University (January 5), Notre Dame de Namur University (January 7) and Dominican University (January 9).

Smith leads the Vulcans with win over Western New Mexico

Photography by Rick Ogata | Special to Hawaii 24/7

MEDIA RELEASE

The University of Hawaii at Hilo beat Western New Mexico University 91-82 in an NCAA Division II contest in the UHH gymnasium.

The Vulcans get their first win of the season and are 1-2 while the Mustangs are also 1-2.

Justin Smith had a break-out game for the Vulcans with 30 points and nine rebounds. He was 15 of 17 from the field with two assists and no turnovers.

“He finished his shots,” UHH head coach Jeff Law said. “His short jumpers went in and those are the ones you don’t know if it’s going to go in or not. He played a good floor game and pretty good defense.”

Kevin Bruce added 15 points aided by three 3-pointers while Brandon James added 14 points and Bryan Ngo had 12.

Stefan Mirabal led the Mustangs with 28 points with 7 of 11 shooting from 3-point range.
The Vulcans trailed 12-2 when Smith’s back-to-back baskets narrowed the margin. After Mirabal gave the Mustangs another 8-point lead, Bruce came off the bench and hit back-to-back treys to pull the Vulcans within a pair.

“That was huge for us,” Law said. “Bryan and Andrew (Gipson) weren’t having a lot of early success and neither was Lavell (Shipman).

“Then Kevin came in. What that does is spread the defense so it gave Justin, Brandon and Zach (Wilde) more room to do what they are able to do.”

Vulcans take a loss in exhibition game

Photography by Rick Ogata | Special to Hawaii 24/7

MEDIA RELEASE

The University of Hawaii at Hilo dropped an exhibition game to Hawaii Select 65-60 in the UHH Gymnasium.

Leading the Vulcans in scoring was Lavell Shipman with 12 points followed by Bryan Ngo with 11.

“My concerns about being a poor shooting team have been answered in our two exhibition games,” said UHH basketball coach Jeff Law. “It’s a very big concern right there.

“Not questioning their effort in any way, shape, or form but I think we need to do more as a unit to get on the same page of what is a good shot and what’s a bad shot, who can take a shot and when. We just didn’t put the ball in the basket today and then we passed up some shots and when we had shots we missed them. It’s going to be an on going process.”

The Vulcans were 24 of 79 from the field (30.4%) and 2 of 17 from 3-point range (11.8%).

Vulcans hang tough with the Warriors in basketball

MEDIA RELEASE

The University of Hawaii at Hilo hung around for 37 minutes before losing 76-65 to the University of Hawaii in an exhibition game in the Stan Sheriff Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii.

With just two returning seniors on his squad, 12th-year head coach Jeff Law made the most of his annual match-up with the Division I Warriors.

“I was happy with our effort,” Law said. “I was a little concerned with so many new guys, putting together and playing against competition like this.”

Justin Smith led the Vulcans with 19 points on 9 of 17 shooting from the field. He also had four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

“Justin’s a good kid, a hard worker and the guys like him,” Law said. “He doesn’t have a lot of negative vibes about him. He can do a lot of different things. For him do to what he did against those guys says a lot about him.”

First-team pre-season all-PacWest selection Bryan Ngo had a rough start to his senior campaign with a 2-for-13 performance from the field for eight points. He also had five rebounds, an assist, two steals and two turnovers.

“Bryan goes a hundred miles an hour,” Law said. “His problem tonight was he got too deep in the forest and couldn’t get the ball through the limbs or the ball around the trunks. He’ll learn from that. He had a couple of games like that last year too.”
