The majority of humpback in the North Pacific migrate to the main Hawaiian islands each year between November through May.

The round-trip distance they travel during this annual migration from their feeding grounds in Alaskan waters is approximately 4,000 miles, one of the longest migration distances of any animal species. And, considering a humpback in the wild lives between 30 and 40 years, that’s a lot of commuting!

During their stay in Hawaii, they do not feed, but rely on energy stored in their blubber. Near the islands, the whales devote most of their time to mating and giving birth to calves.

A mature humpback whale measures about 45 feet in length and can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. Their calves weigh around 3,000 pounds at birth and nourish off their mother’s high-fat milk for six to eight months, consuming 100 to 130 gallons per day.

Studies indicate whale-watching tours attract about 1 million passengers each year, contributing more than $80 million to the state’s coffers.

Kealakekua brush fire, Tuesday, Dec. 29 (Photo courtesty The Mayor's Office)

MEDIA RELEASE

Thursday, March 11th, 6:30 PM at the Konawaena Elementary School

In the wake the forest fire of last month which devastated over 1,800 acres of land in Kealakekua, the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO) is preparing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for South Kona.

The Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization is a non-profit which was founded in 2002 by a diverse group of stakeholders, who came together to develop simple, effective strategies to mitigate wildfire threats in Hawaii.

To protect the community from the threat of future fires, HWMO is collaborating with the Hawaii County Fire Department, the Hawaii County Civil Defense Department, and the State Department of Land and Natural Resources to draft a Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

The CWPP will be a collaborative plan to address wildfire threats in the South Kona community. The process involves gathering community input, and developing solutions to mitigate wildfires. HWMO encourages residents to learn more, and is hosting a meeting March 11 at the Konawaena Elementary School beginning at 6:30 PM.

For more information on how to get involved, contact Gail Byrne, Executive Director of the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, at (808) 938-8880
