After three days of air, ocean and land searching in the Keauhou area fire department crews still have not found missing swimmer 30 year-old Daniel Wright of Kailua-Kona.
Ocean conditions were better today with moderate surf and good water visibility.

Fire/rescue crews made multiple free dives and scuba dives in Keauhou Wednesday (Jan 13) searching for swimmer, Daniel Wright, who went missing on Monday (Jan 11) after a cliff jump into the ocean.
At 8:30 a.m. divers found swim shorts in approximately 15 feet of water 100 yards off-shore. Ocean conditions were turbulent with surges and swells in the area. A search by air and land continued along the coastline. The search was suspended and is set to resume Thursday (Jan 14).
UPDATED FIRE MEDIA RELEASE (1/12/10 6:38 p.m.)
Search and rescue efforts began at daybreak Tuesday (Jan 12). The fire department rescue boat was used to conduct a shoreline and scuba dive search but did not find the victim. Due to the high surf and low visibility only one scuba dive entry was made. Chopper one performed search patterns up to five miles north and south and two miles out from where the victim was last seen Monday (Jan 11).
The search will continue tomorrow at first light with Chopper one and the rescue boat.

A man reported missing after he jumped off a cliff into high surf has been identified as 30-year-old Daniel Wright of Kailua-Kona.
Wright was last seen around 2:30 p.m. Monday (January 11) in waters off “End of the World” at the end of Ali’i Drive. He was observed drifting out to sea and treading water. Shortly thereafter, witnesses lost sight of him.
The Fire Department searched for him Monday and Tuesday using a boat and a helicopter. As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the search was unsuccessful.

A 30-year-old Kailua-Kona man was reported missing Monday (January 11) after he jumped off a cliff into high surf at the end of Ali’i Drive, known as “End of the World,” where he and two friends intended to go swimming.
Police investigation revealed that witnesses last saw the man around 2:30 p.m. He was observed drifting out to sea and treading water. Shortly thereafter, witnesses lost sight of him.
Fire rescue dispatched a rescue boat and helicopter to search the area until dark. The Fire Department was to continue the search at first light Tuesday.
MEDIA RELEASE (1/11/10)
A 27 year-old man is missing in rough seas off Keauhou after jumping off the shoreline cliffs Monday (Jan 11).
A friend of the victim said the man decided to jump into the ocean at the end of Alii Drive near an area nicknamed ‘end of the world’ where people jump into the ocean off 20 foot shoreline cliffs. Witnesses reported that the man could not get back to shore due to the rough surf smashing against the rocky coastline of steep cliffs. The man was approximately 100 yards off-shore and was not seen again.
Fire/rescue crews got the alarm for the incident at 6 p.m. and dispatched an engine, medic unit, two helicopters and a rescue boat to search for the man who was not found. The search will resume at daybreak Tuesday (Jan 12).
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning until 6 p.m. Tuesday (Jan 12). The Department of Parks and Recreation closed Kahalu’u, La’aloa, Milolii, and Hookena Beach Parks at approximately 3 p.m. Monday afternoon due to increasing surf. Beach openings will be reassessed in the morning in regards to ocean surf conditions.

MEDIA RELEASE
Fire/Rescue crews responded to a 2:36 p.m. alarm Saturday (Dec 5) for two people in large ocean surf in Keauhou near the end of Alii Drive, also known as ‘End of the World Shoreline.’
Crews found two people in the ocean: one treading water, the other floating face-down about 50-75 yards offshore. Rescue personnel entered the ocean to assess both people then had a helicopter airlift them to shore. Both victims were treated and transported to Kona Community Hospital.

David Holfve, Gevalia Kaffe, Sherri Johns, WholeCup Coffee Consulting, and Masahiro Yamamichi, Ueshima Coffee Company, judge the preliminary round of the Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition & Gevalia Crown Competition at the Keauhou Beach Resort.
The Gevalia Kona Coffee Classic Cupping Competition and the Gevalia Crown Competition are blind tastings of Kona’s finest coffee. Entries are assigned a random number to assure anonymity. To keep the judges’ palates alert between Wednesday’s preliminary and Thursday’s final round, these numbers are changed as the entries progress in the competition. Judges are looking for high marks in fragrance, aroma, taste, nose, aftertaste and body.
“This is one of the closest competitions in years. This is another good year for Kona. Over all, Kona’s quality is consistent,” commented Gevalia Master Taster Dave Holfve.
The following 15 Kona coffee farms were selected to advance from the 61 entries in Wednesday’s preliminary round. These 15 Classic finalists’ farms are usually less than two acres. The public is invited to witness the final round of the coveted Gevalia Kona Coffee Classic Cupping Competition on Thursday.

Tennis will be taking a step back into history with the revival of the Interisland Tennis Championships to be held at Holua Tennis Center, November 6-8, 2009.
The event was first held in the Islands in the 1900s, took a few breaks here and there, and with the help of Ron Seno and Hattie Somerville, the event reappeared in the early 90s at the Royal Waikoloan. The last known winner of the Championships was the Big Island in 1993. They closely edged out Oahu with Maui coming in a close third.
Here is how it works — while playing a regular tournament draw, individuals are also accumulating points for their Island. At the end of the tournament there will be individual event winners AND there will be an overall Island winner who gets to claim the Interisland Championship Trophy and bragging rights.
The tournament will include Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles for 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 & Open divisions plus a 65 & Over Age Division. Entry fees are $20 per event and $35 for two events. Entries close Monday, November 2nd at 5:00 PM. Fees include a player party on Saturday evening.
“This tournament has a great history in the islands and we thought it was time to bring it back,” said Tournament Director Cheryl Shrum. “When the tournament first started, players traveled by steam ships and cane trains to get to the event, often taking a half a day or longer. So not only does it have that kind of history behind it but it was also treated as the Davis Cup of the Islands. The players get really involved in rooting for their island, creating a lot of fun and camaraderie.”

In season from April through September, mango gets its due during an inaugural festival Saturday, Aug. 1 during Mango Festival 2009. The all-day mango mania showcases Big Isle growers and chefs and begins with a cooking presentation and free sampling at the Keauhou Farmers’ Market, continues at the Kona Mango Experience and culminates at a Mango-Inspired Dinner.
KEAUHOU FARMERS’ MARKET
Mango mania kicks off 8 a.m.-noon at the Keauhou Farmers’ Market at Keauhou Shopping Center.
In addition to browsing for locally grown and produced food, check out a free farmer-chef presentation showcasing mango at 10 a.m.
Chef William Kaluakini Trask will demonstrate how to use mango in recipes and orchard manager Stuart Johnson will share growing and harvesting tips for backyard gardeners.
KONA MANGO EXPERIENCE
Geared for families, the Kona Mango Experience is 2-6 p.m. at the Keauhou Beach Resort’s Royal Garden.
Vote for the best mango-inspired art, enjoy live entertainment and shop for mango-themed gifts and snacks: jams and chutneys, art, wood crafts, smoothies and shave ice.
While parents browse, children can enjoy the festival’s coloring book in the Keikiland area. In addition, families can take a guided walking tour of the resort’s historical heiau and grounds.
Got mango at home? Learn how to cultivate Mangifera indica with the guidance of several local experts who will detail growing, grafting and natural pest control.
Sharing their know-how will be Ken Love of the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers Association, Marla and Pete Hunter of Eke Nui Farm and staff from the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) Extension Office.
In addition, the Mango Experience will offer info on ways to use the nutrient-rich fruit.
Trask will lead Konawaena High School Culinary Arts students and instructor Chef Patti Kimball in demonstrating fresh fruit cutting and preparation techniques. Randyl Rupar of Mana Kea Gardens will delve into mango’s medicinal benefits.
Admission to the Kona Mango Experience is $10 and includes a bottle of Hawaiian Springs Water, a chance to win a host of prizes and your choice of a Kona Brewing Company beverage or the festival’s mango coloring book and crayons.
Tickets are available at the Kailua Village Artists Gallery at the Keauhou Beach Resort, Divine Goods in Holualoa, the Keauhou Farmers’ Market, the South Kona Green Market and at the door.
MANGO-INSPIRED DINNER
The juicy jive culminates with a Mango-Inspired Dinner 6:30 p.m. at the Keauhou Beach Resort.
The menu is Thai Style Big Island Beef Salad with Mapulehu Mango Vinaigrette and South Kona Mango Scented Grilled Mahi Mahi with jasmine rice, asparagus and Rapoza Mango Relish. The magnificent mango meal finishes with Warm Haden Mango Sweet Bread Pudding with Mango Cream Anglaze.

MANGO FEST PACKAGE
The Keauhou Beach Resort is offering a Mango Fest Package. It includes tickets to the Kona Mango Experience and Mango-Inspired Dinner, a one-night stay at the hotel and complimentary self-service breakfast buffet the following day.
The package price is $149 for single and $199 for double, plus tax. In addition, the hotel’s Verandah Lounge celebrates the Mango Festival with a refreshing tropical libation, the Mangorita, priced at $6. It will be served during the day and at the dinner.

The Kona Visayan Club (KVC) will host the 3rd Annual Philippine American Friendship Doubles Tennis Tournament on July 25- 26, 2009 at the Holua Tennis Center at Mauna Loa Village. The event categories of the tournament are recreational, men’s, women’s and mixed doubles. Trophies and champion T-shirts will be awarded to the winners of each category.
