Early registration for EMS Family Fun Run/Walk ends March 19

Early registration for EMS Family Fun Run/Walk ends March 19

MEDIA RELEASE

In celebration of Emergency Medical Services Week, the Hawaii Fire Department is sponsoring its 10th annual EMS Family Fun Run/Walk and Health Fair on Sunday, May 30. The event will take place at Liliuokalani Park, and the public is invited to participate.

This year’s proceeds will benefit the Hawaii Island branch office of the American Lung Association in Hawaii, and also help a County of Hawaii employee and supporter of EMS Week since its inception, recently diagnosed with leukemia.

The 5K Family Fun Run and 2-Mile Walk begins and ends at Liliuokalani Park in Hilo. The route proceeds from Lihiwai Street to the lighthouse tower at Bayfront Highway, then back along the same route to the park. The 2-mile walk also begins at the park to a shorter turn-around point and back.

Both events will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, May 30. A Keiki Fun Run, a non-competitive event for children ages 3 to 10, will be held within Liliuokalani Park following the 5K run.

Applications may be obtained at the Spencer Health and Fitness Center, the Fire Administration office located at the County Building, 25 Aupuni Street, Suite 2501 in Hilo, at any district fire station, or by calling 932-2900 during normal business hours.

The entrance fee is $20 for adults, and $10 for youth, students & seniors (60+). Deadline to guarantee a shirt is Friday, May 19.

Awards will be presented following the completion of the event. All participants will also become eligible to receive random drawing prizes. HMSA, Spencer Health and Fitness Center, KTA Super Stores, and Clif Bar are major sponsors of the event.

The family fun run/walk will also kick off various events and displays that will continue throughout the day.

The American Heart Association (blood pressure screening), Ululani Pharmacy (blood sugar/cholesterol screening), Big Island Asthma Coalition-East Hawaii (asthma awareness and education), Hospice of Hilo, Tri Fit (personal fitness assessment administered by Keaau High School students), and the County of Hawaii Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (Keiki ID) are among the agencies that will provide their services to the public.

The Hawaii Island branch office of the American Lung Association in Hawaii will have volunteers and staff on hand to assist with the event as well as to provide information about their services.

For more information on the organization, call Sally Ancheta at 935‑1206.

EMS Week, which is celebrated nationwide, will bring together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety, and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of the medical “front line.” This year’s theme, “Anytime. Anywhere. We’ll Be There.” underscores the commitment and dedication of the 750,000 EMS personnel who provide an essential community service every day.

The Emergency Medical Services Week coordinators are Fire Captain/Mobile Intensive Care Technician Lance Uchida (Central Fire Station, telephone 961-8325) and Battalion Chief Jerry Lum (telephone 961-8348). The fun run/walk race director is Firefighter/Mobile Intensive Care Technician Jesse Ebersole (Kawailani Fire Station, telephone 959‑7012).

The County of Hawaii’s Emergency Medical Services Division, a State-funded program, provides 24-hour quality pre-hospital emergency medical care and services to the residents and visitors on Hawaii. Last year, EMS responded to 15,559 calls for assistance islandwide.

To learn more about your local EMS Division, call 961-8319.

Ironman: Runners take (it) off for charity in Underpants Run

Ironman: Runners take (it) off for charity in Underpants Run

Photography by Baron Sekiya | Hawaii 24/7

Karin Stanton/Hawaii247 Contributing Editor

Any other day, this could get you arrested. But when it’s the Underpants Run, you can get away with going out in public looking like this.

Some 400 athletes and a variety of exhibitionists joined in the 12th annual fundraiser Thursday morning to blow off a little steam ahead of Saturday’s Ironman World Triathlon Championship.

The Underpants Run got its start more than a decade ago when locals decided they needed a way to poke fun at European triathletes strolling around town in their Speedos.

The goofy little pre-race tradition now is spectator event in its own right.

“I think it’s pretty cool. My dad runs in it every year,” said Kyle Johnson, of Carlsbad, Calif.

Johnson said he even picked a favorite outfit, although not one he would ever actually wear.

“That guy who just ran by in the zebra stripe shorts with the pink lace trim. A little funky.”

Ann McCormack was out to support her husband David, who first competed in Kona 22 years ago and is back for his 10th race.

“If you are here, it’s one of the things you just have to experience,” said the Melbourne resident. “Everybody’s letting off steam and it benefits charity, so it’s fun”

Julie Dukes’ mom and biggest cheerleader said there is nothing like this back home in Annapolis, Md.

“It’s very interesting to say the least,” she said. “It gets everyone in a good spirit.”

Ian Mickelson, of Torrance, Calif. certainly was in good spirits.

“This is just for the fun of it. There’s not too many other days in the year I can do this,” said Mickelson, who will be competing in the 25-29 age group. “It took a good couple of days to put it all together.”

For the record, he was wearing blue and yellow running shoes, a pair of knee-high tube socks with rainbow stripes, light blue and pink paisley Speedos, (“the more pink the better”), a Shaun Cassidy blonde mullet wig and a pair of sunglasses he probably borrowed from the C.H.I.P.S. wardrobe department.

“Yeah, well, Eric Estrada looked good in these,” he said.

“The world championship is a very important race for these guys,” said Paul Huddle, retired triathlete and an Underpants Run organizer. “This is just a fun way to release some of the pre-race tension. It’s just 400 triathletes out protesting the wearing of underwear around town.”

Just then, two Elvis’ (or is that Elvi?) cruised past.

“And if you’ve got one Elvis, you’re good,” Huddle said. “We’re really lucky to have two here today.”

Also among the organizers is Paula Newby-Fraser, the eight-time world champion and legendary Queen of Kona.

“This event just takes the edge off,” she said. “Ironman is very intense, but this lightens it up ahead of the race.

Sponsors donated boxes of compression socks, underwear, visors and T-shirts, which were sold to raise more than $5,000 for local charities, including Special Olympics West Hawaii.

Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K run/walk at HPA registration deadline Oct 1

Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K run/walk at HPA registration deadline Oct 1

MEDIA RELEASE

Runners, walkers, and families are invited to participate in the First Annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson 5K Run/Walk beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) cross country course.

The course, located at the school’s Upper Campus, is a challenging, but fun course that includes hills and flats.

Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, passed away in June after a valiant battle against breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and organizers hope to increase awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection.

All proceeds from the event will fund an annual high school scholarship established to recognize and support an HPA student who demonstrates positive athletic and academic efforts.

Registration and pledge forms are available online at www.bienifunrun.org. The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner-up fundraiser will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win.

Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age category and to the top two overall male and female finishers.

Entry fee is $20 for adults, $10 for students 14 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after Oct. 1. The event is made possible by Hawaii Preparatory Academy and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

For more information, call Liz Noetzel at 808-989-9100 (e-mail: Bkj5kfunrun@gmail.com).
