MEDIA RELEASE

University of Hawaii at Hilo seniors Bryan Ngo and Kevin Bruce gave it their all in a last second gasp as the Vulcans fell short in their season finale, a 66-63 loss to Chaminade University in a Pacific West Conference game in the UHH gymnasium.

The Vulcans finish the season at 13-13 overall and 7-9 in the PacWest while the Silverswords are 10-15 overall and also 7-9 in the PacWest.

With seven seconds left on the clock and down by three, Ngo poked the ball away from Silversword guard Steven Bennett. Bruce tracked the ball down and kicked it back to Ngo. Prevented from driving to the basket and needing a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime, Ngo got the ball to Bruce whose shot bounced off the front of the rim.

Justin Smith led the Vulcans with 20 points and was a perfect 9 for 9 from the field and 2 for 2 at the charity stripe. The junior forward also pulled in seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

Lavell Shipman added 13 points while Bruce had 11 points.

A homecoming fit for a Champion

“2010 Division II State Champions” That’s a title that the Pahoa boys basketball team will have to live with, not that they will mind at all.

Pahoa won the title by defeating the defending champions Kailua 41-38 in an exciting, down-to-the-wire game Saturday, March 6 in Honolulu.

The welcoming party started Sunday morning even before the team stepped off the plane at Hilo International Airport with a water shower as their plane taxied toward the gate. A large crowd of fans and family gathered at the gate in anticipation of the team’s arrival.

After a few minutes of waiting, the enthusiastic crowd let out a loud “CHEER” when the first player was spotted at the top of the stairs. After being greeted by the many fans and family, Mayor Billy Kenoi proclaimed Sunday as “Pahoa High School, Division II State Champions Day”.

Many fans were talking about the well-known movie “Hoosiers,” the story of a small town Indiana High School that won its state basketball title. Just like the movie, the small town Pahoa boy’s team won the title against schools with a much larger enrollment.

In an interview on OC16 after the game, Isaiah Ekau was asked “what did winning the title meant to Pahoa” his answer was “now it put Pahoa on the map”.

Members of the Championship team are, Sonny Miguel, Christopher Mendoza, William Wong Jr., Hamlet Walsh, John Byrd Jr., Kaohu Schweitzer, Isaiah Ekau, Harry Leopoldino, Lono Balai, Jared Peleiholani, Nicklas Fisher, and Osten Flores. Coaches, Mark Saito, Rey Corpuz, and Naha Kaawaloa Jr.

Freshman Fisher was named to the All-Tournament Team, while senior Ekau was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

DII championship final: Pahoa 41, Kailua 38

DII championship final: Pahoa 41, Kailua 38

Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7 Contributing Editor

Kailua, which ran away with the Division II title last year, was looking to repeat Saturday, March 6 at the state boy’s basketball tournament. But a tough ‘n’ scrappy Pahoa Daggers team had other ideas.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Eric Yoshimura, Pahoa hung in to take its first state basketball championship, 41-38.

Nick Fisher scored 17 points and the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Isaiah Ekau added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Daggers.

Jordan DeCorte led Kailua with 14 points and seven rebounds. Rhys Nakakura added 10 points and Corey Lau had eight points, four assists and two steals.

Pahoa poured it on at the start of the fourth quarter, pumping their lead up to 33-26 with under 5 minutes to go.

A couple of free-throws gave Pahoa a 37-31 advantage within under 1 minute left, but Kailua muscled back with a three-pointer.

With just 3.3 seconds left on the clock, Kailua fought its way under the basket and pulled to within a point, 39-38.

Pahoa inbounds .. foul by Kailua. Pahoa at the line, two points. Final buzzer. Pahoa are champs!

Kailua dropped one to go up 26-24 as the seconds ticked away in the third quarter. Pahoa had two shots bounce around the bucket, but couldn’t pull back.

Kailua has the two-point advantage at the end of three quarters.

Pahoa snatched the ball away from Kailua more than one half-dozen times in the first
half, but could not quite capitalize on possession and managed only a three-point lead into the locker room at half-time.

Pahoa and Kailua were both unseeded for the tournament, with Pahoa knocking off top seed Roosevelt and Kailua taking out No. 3 seed St. Joseph on the way to the championship game at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Pahoa was the first BIIF school to reach the Division II final since Kohala in 2007. Since the two division format, no BIIF school had won the title.

Going into the game, Kailua had a season record of 15-4; BIIF runners-up Pahoa stood at 8-9

Also in the Division II bracket, St. Joseph went on to whip Roosevelt, 48-42, for fifth place. Roosevelt must now dread playing Big Island teams, as it was Pahoa that knocked them into the consolation bracket.

Later Saturday, No. 1 seed Iolani and Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama tip off for the Division I crown.

Mayor Billy Kenoi will welcome back the state champion Pahoa High School boy’s basketball team Sunday, March 7 at Hilo International Airport .

Boys all-star game scheduled for Saturday (March 13)

MEDIA RELEASE

Boys all-star games scheduled with creative teen programming and teen dance to follow games

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB BIG ISLAND ALL-STAR BASKETBALL CLASSIC

HILO, HAWAII MARCH 4, 2010: The boys version of the Boys & Girls Club Big Island Basketball Classic is set for Saturday, March 13th 5p Rising Stars game and 6:30p Senior game at the Hilo Civic Auditorium. The Classic, a collaboration with the County of Hawaii Parks & Recreation, will include a creative set of underage drinking teen programming which will be conducted at the Club during the day Saturday, March 13th from 10a to 2p with both high school boys and girls all-star teams participating. There will be a teen dance immediately following the games at the Civic for all teenagers ages 14 to 18.

The Club’s teen initiative includes a strong commitment to our community’s underage drinking problems and with the help of the County of Hawaii will take the all-stars through a group of anti-alcohol activities to show them the ill effects of underage drinking. This will not just be a game according to organizers as each participant will be required to participate in Boys & Girls Club leadership, anti-tobacco, anti-alcohol, and anti-drug messaging with our SmartMoves programming. Along with the club’s teen initiative and national branding campaign BE GREAT, the game will be an avenue to influence the future leaders of our community with positive messaging and to give exposure to our student/athletes and encourage younger kids to aspire and dream to BE GREAT !!

The girls all-star games will be the night before, Friday, March 12th 6p Rising Stars game and 7:30p Senior game at the Hilo Civic Auditorium. Admission to the games for each night will be $3 for adults and $1 for students and seniors. All proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island and concessions will be available and benefit the club’s Hoop Dreams Hawaii travel teams.
