MEDIA RELEASE

Today’s Pacific West Conference doubleheader between the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Grand Canyon University has been rained out.

Due to the rain out, 3 p.m. doubleheaders will be played on Monday and Tuesday, March 1 and 2 at Wong Stadium.

The University of Hawaii at Hilo earned a split with Hawaii Pacific University as John Holley tossed a five-hitter to lead the Vulcans to a 7-2 win the first game at the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball stadium.

The Sea Warriors (5-1) came back to win the second game 9-6.

Holley made his first appearance of the season a good one as he gave up two runs and a walk but struck out six. Phil Hackney closed the game with a one-hit, one-walk performance in the final inning.

The offense gave Holley early support with a run in the first then two more on John Hoffman’s 2-run triple in the second. Hoffman doubled in another run in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.

The Vulcans added three runs in the fifth on a hit and a Sea Warrior error.

Keoni Manago was 2 for 4 while Hoffman was 2 for 2.

The Vulcans (4-8) fell behind 7-1 in the second game after giving up six runs in the third inning. They came back for two in their half after Shane Kessel singled in T.J. Pilla and Joshua Wong followed with a single.

Two more were scored in the sixth as Arlie Johnson doubled in a run and then Kekoa Lee followed with sacrifice fly.

Hoffman continued his hitting with a 2-for-2 game with an RBI and a double. T.J. Pilla was 3 for 3 with a double while Arlie Johnson added two hits and an RBI.

They got hits but couldn’t push across the runs as the University of Hawaii at Hilo dropped their season opening Pacific West Conference doubleheader to Hawaii Pacific University 8-1 and 4-2 (9) at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

“We just didn’t play very well the whole day,” said UHH head coach Joey Estrella. “I don’t know if we’re trying too hard, not trying hard enough or not executing but we have to play a lot better than these two games. When you have a chance to win it in your half of the inning, you’ve got to do it. We didn’t take advantage of any opportunities they gave us.

“We just didn’t have it tonight. We’re hoping to come back tomorrow.”

The Vulcans are 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest while the Sea Warriors are 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.

In game one, Ronnie Loeffler was off to another good pitching outing before a ball, lost in the sun, fell in for a double. That led to a 5-run, 5-hit inning for the Sea Warriors aided by two errors. Of the seven runs Loeffler allowed only two were earned. He finished with five strikeouts.
Ronel Trias pushed across the Vulcans run with a two-out single in the fifth. Trias and Kalehua Moniz collected two hits each in the game.

Game two’s starter Kekoa Lee had seven strong innings before turning the mound over to Tyler Simao. Lee gave up just two hits on six hits while striking out three. Simao (0-1) gave up just three hits over the final two innings.

Shane Kessel had two of the Vulcans’ seven hits. The Vulcans stranded six hits.
