MEDIA RELEASE

Fire/rescue responded to a 7:56 p.m. alarm Friday (Oct 9) for a fire north of the Wailuku River Bridge (the singing bridge for those who have driven over it).

Crews found an improvised shack like structure engulfed in flames with the fire spreading to nearby brush. The unoccupied structure was in a vacant lot. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and wet down the area.

Highway 19 was closed between Waianuenue Avenue and Pukihae Street for about 45 minutes and traffic was detoured through Wainaku.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation and there were no injuries or monetary loss reported in the fire.
